The Earth’s rotation is gradually slowing
Due to a transfer of Earth's rotational momentum to the Moon's orbital momentum as tidal friction slows the Earth's rotation..
It is well known that for four and one half billion years, its entire lifetime, the Earth's rotation has been gradually slowing. The slowing rotation of the Earth results in a longer day as well as a longer month. Once the length of a day equals the length of a month, the tidal friction mechanism will cease. That's been projected to happen once the day and month both equal about 47 (current) days, billions of years in the future.
The Earth was once believed to be the centre of the universe
It is known as the Fixed Earth Theory or geocentric it model states that the Earth is, despite all evidence to the contrary, located at the very center of the universe, and the rest of the cosmos revolve around our very own planet. some people have still refused to let go of the idea that anything but humans could be at the center of the universe. It was most notably argued by Ptolemy.
Earth is the only planet not named after a god The Name
Earth is the only one in our solar system that does not come from Greco-Roman mythology. All of the other planets were named after Greek and Roman gods and goddesses. The word ‘Earth’ came from the Anglo-Saxon word ‘erda’ and it’s germanic equivalent ‘erde’ which means ground or soil. In Old English, the word became ‘eor(th)e’ or ‘ertha ‘.
The Earth is the most dense planet
Of all the planets in our solar system, the Earth has the greatest density. The density of the Earth is 5.513 g/cm3(around 12 grams per cubic centimeter). This is an average of all of the material on the planet. Water is of course, much less dense than iron, hence an average is needed for ease of use.Meanwhile Mercury comes second in the race of the most dense planet with 5.43 g/cm³. Close Enough!
Earth doesn't take whole 24hours to rotate around its axis
Yes. You read it right. Earth takes 23 hours, 56 minutes and 4 seconds to rotate on its axis and not 24 hours and there are 365 and a quarter day in a year (The extra quarter day is why we need a leap year every four years.)
Earth has more than one Moon
You’re aware that The Earth has 1 moon. But did you know there are 2 additional asteroids locked into a co-orbital orbits with Earth? They’re called 3753 Cruithne and 2002 AA29.
The 3753 Cruithne was Discovered by Duncan Waldron on October 10, 1986.Its approximately 5kilometres in diameter and its distance from earth is 12 million kilometres. Cruithne is in a normal elliptic orbit around the Sun. Its period of revolution around the Sun, approximately 364 days at present, is almost equal to that of the Earth. Because of this, Cruithne and Earth appear to "follow" each other in their paths around the Sun.
The 2002 AA29 was Discovered by LINEAR(Lincoln Near Earth Asteroid Research) on January 9, 2002. Its only about 20–100 metres in diameter and its distance from earth is 5.8 million kilometres. It has almost circular orbit very similar to that of the Earth around sun
The Earth is not actually round in shape.
Planet Earth is not, in fact, perfectly round it is geoid.. The circumference of Earth at the equator is about 24,902 miles (40,075 km), but from pole-to-pole — the meridional circumference — Earth is only 24,860 miles (40,008 km) around. Isaac Newton first proposed that Earth was not perfectly round. Instead, he suggested it was an oblate spheroid—a sphere that is squashed at its poles and swollen at the equator. He was correct!
Each winter there are about 1 septillion snow crystals that drop from the sky.
Snow is precipitation in the form of flakes of crystalline water ice that falls from clouds. Snow crystals form when tiny supercooled cloud droplets (about 10 μm in diameter) freeze. And each winter there are about 1 septillion (1, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000 or a trillion trillion) snow crystals that drop from the sky
1.3 million Earths could fit inside the sun, an average-sized star.
Sun has a diameter of 1.392 million km and earth’s diameter is hardly 12,742 kmThe ratio of the Sun's radius to the Earth's radius is
1,392,000/12756 = 109.1
This means the ratio of their volumes is 109.1 x 109.1 x 109.1, which is about 1,300,000,and that means that 1,300,000 Earths should fit inside the Sun.
There are more living organisms in a teaspoonful of soil than there are people on earth
The soil is actually an ecosystem in which millions of living creatures lives. There can be more creatures in a teaspoonful of soil than there are people in the entire planet earth, i.e. more than 7+ billion. The soil is the source of many different types of food for these creatures and is also the source of their nutrition and water.
Before trees were common, the Earth was covered with giant mushrooms.
It is thought that 420 to 350 million years ago, there were fungi that grew to heights of 24 feet. Scientists believe that certain fossils are evidence that giant mushrooms, referred to as Prototaxites, covered the Earth before trees and other land plants became commonplace.while any of the few newly evolved trees were no more than about 3 feet tall. The first Prototaxite fossils were discovered in Canada in 1859, but it wasn’t until about 2007 that it became accepted that the fossils were from giant fungi.
Our galaxy probably contains at least 2 billion planets like Earth.
Data from Kepler space observatory suggests planets capable of supporting life are far more common than previously thought. Our galaxy probably contains at least two billion planets that, like Earth, have liquid water on their surfaces and orbit around their parent stars in the "habitable zone" for life. The nearest, according to astronomers, could be a mere 12 light years(108 trillion miles) away.
The temperature in Earth's core is 7,500°c, hotter than the sun.
Earth’s core is made primarily of molten iron, and that it’s the temperature difference between the liquid core of the Earth and its solid mantle that causes the Earth to have a magnetic field. The temperature at the Earth’s core is about 6,000 degrees Celsius which is a temperature about 9% higher than what exists on the surface of the Sun - 5500 degrees Celsius.
Lightning strikes Earth about 100 times per second or 8.6 Million times per day.
Lightning Alley receives the most lightning in the United States on an annual basis. Furthermore, more than 90% of the lightning in this area occurs from May through October, between the hours of noon and midnight.During this time of day and year. One lightning casualty occurred for every 86,000 flashes in the United States. One death occurred for every 345,000 flashes. One injury occurred for every 114,000 flashes
The Earth lost 40% of its wildlife in the past 40 years, according to the WWF.
The examination by researchers at WWF and the Zoological Society of London found. that the quantity of wild creatures on Earth has split in the previous 40 years, as per another examination. Animals crosswise over area, streams and the oceans are being obliterated as people execute them for sustenance in unsustainable numbers, while dirtying or wrecking their environments.
Earth is the only place in the solar system where a total solar eclipse can happen
A solar eclipse is a natural event that takes place on Earth when the Moon moves in its orbit between Earth and the Sun (this is also known as an occultation). It happens at New Moon, when the Sun and Moon are in conjunction with each other. To have an overshadowing the planet needs to have a moon. The obscurations change in nature and length relying upon how huge the satellite and the Sun show up in the sky of a specific planet
The Soviets drilled the world's deepest hole into the earth for 14 years: it's 12,262 metres deep.
The Kola Superdeep Borehole is the result of a scientific drilling project of the Soviet Union in the Pechengsky District, on the Kola PeninsulaThe project attempted to drill as deep as possible into the Earth's crust. Drilling began on 24 May 1970.In terms of true depth, it is the deepest borehole in the world. The main target depth was set at 15,000 m. However, because of higher-than-expected temperatures at this depth and location, 180 °C instead of expected 100 °C, drilling deeper was deemed infeasible and the drilling was stopped in 1992.
Large parts of Canada have less gravity than the rest of Earth. The phenomenon was discovered in the 1960s
For over 40 years, researchers have attempted to make sense of what's bringing on vast parts of Canada, especially the Hudson Bay area, to be "missing" gravity. At the end of the day, gravity in the Hudson Bay zone and encompassing areas is lower than it is in different parts of the world, it was first discovered in the 1960s when the Earth's worldwide gravity fields were being outlined.
Earth days are getting longer
Earth days are getting longer by 1.7 milliseconds every century.Millions of years ago, a day on Earth will have been 20 hours long. It is believed that, in millions of years time, a day on Earth will be 27 hours long.
If the earth didn't have the moon, our days would only be 6 hours long
The days would be shorter if it weren’t for the moon.. the moon is affected by earths gravity that makes earth’s rotation slower but the Earth’s rotation slows down slightly over time, thanks to the tidal friction provided by the Moon. The slow-down is very, very slow, the difference is just about a millisecond in a year, but over millions and even billions of years, it adds up to be a big number and that makes a huge difference..
For example: In about 4million years we won’t need a leap year to synchronise with earths’s rotation.
Only about .003 percent of the water on Earth can be used by humans.
Despite of the facts that Earth is a blue planet and 71% of Earth's surface is covered with water, We really don't have clean and usable water for us. The amount of water that we can use for ourself is only 0.003 percent only! SAVE WATER GUYS!!
Global warming has raised the earth's average surface temperature about 1.5°F (0.8°C) since the Industrial Revolution.
According to an ongoing temperature analysis conducted by scientists at NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS), the average global temperature on Earth has increased by about 0.8° Celsius since 1880 Of which 2/3rd of the global warming has occurred since 1975, at a rate of roughly 0.15-0.20°C per decade.
Fossil evidence suggests that fish have been on Earth for about 530 million years.
The evolution of fish began about 530 million years ago during the Cambrian explosion. The Cambrian explosion, or less commonly Cambrian radiation, was the relatively short evolutionary event, beginning around 542 million years ago in the Cambrian Period, during which most major animal phyla appeared, as indicated by the fossil record.
Earth, Texas is the only place on Earth named "Earth."
Earth is a city in Lamb County, West Texas, United States. As of the 2010 Census, the population was 1,065.Earth was established by William E. Halsell, who laid out the townsite in 1924. Originally Halsell named the city Fairlawn, but in 1925 it was renamed Earth when it was learned that there was already a town in Texas by the name of Fairlawn.
Each day, up to 4 billion meteoroids fall to Earth
A meteor is a bright streak of light in the sky (a "falling star" or a "shooting star") produced by the entry of a small meteoroid into the Earth's atmosphere. If you have a dark clear sky you will probably see a few per hour on an average night; during one of the annual meteor showers you may see as many as 100/hour.
From a distance, Earth would be the brightest of the planets. This is because sunlight is reflected off the planet's water.
If we go and look at our Solar System from a distance, Earth would be the brightest of the planets. This is because sunlight is reflected off the planet's water and the glaciers. So it reflects maximum of sunlight and will look brighter.
Earth Had a Twin Planet Called Theia
There was once a Mars-sized body referred to as 'Theia' orbiting in our solar system, according to Giant Impact Hypothesis. The planet was named after the Greek Titan who brought forth the Moon goddess Selene—a fitting name considering that the planet Theia is thought to be in charge of the conception of our moo
The Oceans are over 90% Unexplored
Over 90% of oceans are still unexplored because Exploring these regions deep below the ocean's surface is difficult, time-consuming and also expensive. But still it hasn't stopped people from trying and making incredible discoveries along the way.
Scientists believe Earth may have had two moons at one point in time.
tiny second moon may once have orbited Earth before catastrophically slamming into the other one, a titanic clash that could explain why the two sides of the surviving lunar satellite are so different from each other, a new study suggests. Both the sides may be from both the different moons which then combined into one.
The largest single living thing is a mushroom fungus in Oregon!
The largest single living thing (apart from reefs constructed of multiople polyps) iss a mushroom fungus in Oregon. Armillaria ostoyae started from a single spore too small to see without a microscope and has been weaving its black shoestring filaments through the forest for an estimated 2,400 years, killing trees as it grows.
Humans can survive 2 minutes in space unprotected
However, animal experiments and human accidents have shown that people can likely survive exposure to vacuum conditions for at least a couple of minutes. However, you wouldn’t remain conscious long enough to rescue yourself. But studies have shown that Humans can survive the Outer Space for approx Two Minutes…
Located in Turkmenistan this place was thought to be a substantial oil field site but they found gas beneath the ground and thought of setting it on fire. So that all the gas will vanish and they can continue working. But they made a huge mistake in calculation. They thought that the gas will be out in a couple of days but it kept burning and its been 44 years and it still doesn't seem to go out of gas anytime soon...
