Raccoon, the 'masked bandit' of the animal world, is famous for its habit of stealing food. Raccoons can eat anything, be it plants or meat. That is why they are called 'Omnivorous' animals. In the wild, they will eat plants, fruits and nuts. In cities , they will steal from your garbage cans, snatch away your pet's food, or grab a fish from your backyard ponds!
Why are they so good at stealing food?
It is because of their front feet that resembles little hands with slender fingers, perfect for opening trash can lids, containers and even door latches.
However this rodent shows a strange behaviour..
They wash their food before they eat! scientists and experts are not sure why they do it. At one time they believed that raccoons don't have enough saliva to moisten their food for swallowing. But this theory has been long proved wrong. Some believes that it helps in mashing the food so that they can get rid of sharpe stick bones. While others say that their front feet have sensitive touch, and , therefore, dipping food in water allows these rodents to hold the food in different ways. Perhaps, the behaviour is just an instinct passed on from generations and does not have any meaning at all...
